Water-based paints use water as the carrier for an acrylic or vinyl resin binder. Because they contain no solvent, they release very little odour during application, allow a room to be reoccupied quickly and keep volatile organic compound emissions low. That makes them the default choice for homes, schools, hospitals, hotels and offices, where people return to the space soon after work finishes. Their most valuable property is breathability. Once cured, the film is porous enough to let moisture inside the wall escape, yet tight enough to keep external water out. This balance prevents the trapped-moisture problem that causes blistering and flaking on plaster and concrete. They bond reliably to gypsum, skim plaster, fair-faced concrete, aerated block and previously painted surfaces. Fast drying is the second advantage. Because the film sets as water evaporates, the second coat can usually be applied the same day, which shortens the labour schedule considerably. Tools are cleaned with water alone, so there is no thinner cost and no solvent waste to dispose of. Choose this category for interior walls and ceilings, exterior acrylic work, plastered surfaces exposed to moisture, and any occupied space where low odour is a requirement. Avoid it on continuously wet industrial floors, production areas exposed to chemical spillage, and bare steel at direct risk of corrosion — those surfaces call for solvent-based or epoxy products instead. Application tip: on absorbent new plaster, thinning the first coat with around 10% water noticeably improves adhesion. Never skip primer on dusty or friable substrates.

Solvent-based paints carry their resin in an organic solvent and cure in two stages: the solvent evaporates, then the resin oxidises in contact with air. This dual mechanism leaves a film that is markedly harder, denser and more resistant to mechanical wear than a water-based equivalent, which is why the category dominates industrial and exterior work. Adhesion to metal is its greatest strength. The solvent wets the thin film of oil and oxide on the surface so the resin can bond directly to the steel — precisely where water-based products struggle on bare metal. For steel structures, door and window frames, railings, machine housings, tanks and pipework, a solvent-based system is the standard answer. Resistance to water and chemicals is the second advantage. Because the cured film is close to non-porous, moisture, salt and dilute chemicals cannot migrate beneath it. That delays the onset of corrosion and extends the maintenance interval of the painted surface. Choose this category for bare or primed metal, exterior structural steel, floors subject to abrasion, workshops and production areas, and any surface where high gloss and easy cleaning are expected. Take care with ventilation: odour and solvent vapour are significant during application, so enclosed spaces must be ventilated and a suitable respirator worn. For interior walls of occupied homes, water-based alternatives are more appropriate. Application tip: with solvent systems the decisive factor is surface preparation. Even the best paint will lift within months if rust, loose old coating and grease are not fully removed. Keep the primer and topcoat within one compatible system, and do not overcoat across incompatible resin families.

Synthetic paints are built on alkyd resin, produced by modifying natural vegetable oils, and combine a decorative finish with real durability in a single product. That is why they remain the most widely used group in the Turkish market: one system covers wood and metal joinery as well as plastered surfaces. The defining characteristic of this group is the full, level film it leaves. Alkyd resin flows out as it is applied, largely closing brush and roller marks. The resulting surface is smooth, glossy and washable, which makes it ideal for doors, windows, architraves, radiators, railings and furniture — every element that is touched constantly. Colour stability is the second strength. Synthetic systems carry pigment well, so opacity stays high even in deep, saturated tones; the thousand-plus shades in the MST colour chart can be produced through this group. The surface may lose some gloss over time, but colour drift remains more limited than with economy water-based products. Choose this category for interior and exterior wooden joinery, metal fittings, plastered and reinforced-concrete surfaces, corridors and stairwells that are wet-cleaned, and decorative details where high gloss is wanted. Take care with alkalinity: alkyd systems are sensitive to alkaline substrates, so freshly poured concrete and new cement render should not be coated directly with synthetic paint before they have fully cured, typically a matter of weeks. Application tip: with synthetic paint, thin coats always beat thick ones. A film laid on heavily in one pass skins over on the outside while staying soft underneath, which causes wrinkling and sagging. Two thin coats dry faster and last longer than one heavy coat.
