Product Information

MST Alkyd Paint is a single-pack, solvent-based topcoat built on modified alkyd resin. It forms both a protective and a decorative layer on metal and wood, drying to a full, high-gloss, washable film.

What sets the product apart is the two-stage curing behaviour of alkyd resin. The solvent evaporates first and the surface becomes touch-dry; the resin then continues to harden by reacting with atmospheric oxygen. This second stage means the film keeps gaining durability over time. The resulting layer resists impact, scratching and wet cleaning markedly better than water-based alternatives.

Its performance on metal comes from the solvent's ability to wet the surface. The carrier dissolves the microscopic film of oxide and oil on the steel so the resin can bond directly to it. Applied over a suitable anti-corrosive primer, it completes a multi-layer barrier against corrosion.

Typical applications include structural steel members, iron joinery, door and window frames, wrought iron and railings, radiators, machine housings, agricultural equipment, warehouse racking and interior wooden joinery. Used outdoors, it protects the substrate against rain, humidity and seasonal temperature swings.

On colour, alkyd systems carry pigment well and deliver high opacity even in deep tones. The wide range in the MST colour chart can be produced through this product, and corporate colour matching or project-specific custom shades can be accommodated.

Surface preparation

Preparation is the single factor that decides the outcome with alkyd paint. On new steel, the surface must be completely free of grease and rust, and the protective mill oil removed with a suitable degreaser. On rusted surfaces, corrosion must be taken back to sound metal with a wire brush or abrasive, and any loose old coating scraped away. Cleaned steel should be primed the same day, otherwise a fresh oxide layer will form.

On wood, sand along the grain, wipe off the dust with a damp cloth and let the surface dry. Knots and resinous areas must be sealed with a suitable stain-blocking primer; if they are not, resin will bleed through the paint over time and cause yellowing.

Primer

Never apply the topcoat directly to bare metal. Apply MST Anti-Rust Primer or an equivalent anti-corrosive primer first and let it dry. On wood, a primer coat is also recommended to even out absorbency; without it, the first coat is drawn into the timber and opacity drops.

Thinning

For brush and roller work the product is normally used as supplied, thinned with synthetic thinner by roughly 5% by volume if required. Spray application may need a higher thinning ratio depending on the nozzle. Water and water-based thinners must never be used.

Coats and waiting time

Two thin coats always outperform one heavy coat. A thick film skins over on the surface while remaining soft underneath, which leads to sagging, wrinkling and prolonged drying. Allow the surface to dry properly between coats — touch-dry is not enough; the film needs to have started hardening before the next coat.

Ambient conditions

Apply in mild, dry weather where possible. At very low temperatures the oxidation of the resin slows and drying is extended; at very high temperatures the surface skins over too early. Do not apply to hot metal in direct sunlight. Avoid application in damp conditions or outdoors when rain is expected.

Safety and cleaning

Because of solvent vapour, ventilate enclosed spaces and wear a suitable respirator and gloves. Clean equipment with synthetic thinner. Rags and waste soaked in solvent can self-heat, so never leave them in a pile — collect them in a closed metal container.

Performance

The cured alkyd film resists mechanical wear and wet cleaning. Outdoors it protects against moisture, rain and the seasonal temperature cycle. Combined with a suitable anti-corrosive primer, it forms a multi-layer barrier against corrosion on metal.

Limitations

Alkyd systems are sensitive to alkaline substrates and must not be applied directly to fresh concrete or new cement render before it has fully cured. Surfaces under permanent water immersion, floors exposed to aggressive chemical spillage and surfaces reaching high service temperatures fall outside this product's scope; epoxy-based systems should be considered in those conditions.

Storage

Store in the closed original container, away from direct sunlight, in a cool dry place. Protect from frost and excessive heat. A skin may form in an opened container; remove it and stir the product thoroughly before use.
