Product Information

MST Anti-Rust Primer is a solvent-based primer containing corrosion-inhibiting pigments, developed for bare and rusted metal. It is the layer no one sees beneath the topcoat, yet it determines how long the whole system lasts.

How long a metal surface stays painted is decided by the primer, not the topcoat. Corrosion does not start on top of the paint but underneath it: moisture and oxygen reach the steel through microscopic pores, oxidation begins, and the expanding rust layer lifts the paint from within. An anti-rust primer breaks that chain at two points. First, it forms a dense, near non-porous film that physically blocks moisture and oxygen from reaching the metal. Second, the corrosion-inhibiting pigments it contains passivate the steel surface and chemically slow oxidation.

The primer's second job is to bond. A smooth, bright metal surface is a poor foundation for a topcoat to grip. The primer adheres strongly to the steel on one side while offering a receptive surface to the topcoat on the other, so the system behaves as a single unit. A topcoat applied without primer will flake off at the first mechanical impact or thermal cycle.

Typical applications include structural steel, iron joinery, door and window frames, railings and wrought iron, roof trusses, warehouse racking, agricultural and construction machinery, tanks and pipework, containers and chassis components. It suits both interior and exterior use, in new fabrication as well as maintenance and repair work.

For system integrity, use it together with MST Alkyd Paint or MST Synthetic Enamel; a primer and topcoat from the same resin family eliminate the blistering and wrinkling seen with incompatible systems.

Surface preparation

The performance of an anti-rust primer depends directly on how clean the surface is. Rust must be removed back to sound metal with a wire brush, abrasive or scraper. Loose and blistered old coating must be taken off completely; where sound old paint is left in place, its surface must be dulled. Protective mill oil and assembly contamination must be removed with a suitable degreaser.

Weld seams and cut edges deserve particular attention — if slag and sharp corners remain, the paint film thins at those points and corrosion starts there. Weld slag must be removed completely and sharp edges lightly rounded.

Prime cleaned metal the same day. Bare steel left exposed develops a fresh oxide layer within hours and adhesion drops.

Application

Stir the product thoroughly before use so no pigment is left at the bottom of the container; corrosion-inhibiting pigments are dense, settle out, and are ineffective if not redispersed.

Apply at supplied consistency by brush or roller, thinning slightly with synthetic thinner if required. Spray application may need more thinning depending on the equipment. Do not use water or water-based thinners.

Prefer two thin coats over one heavy coat. Applying an extra brush pass (a stripe coat) on corners, edges, bolt heads and weld seams during the first coat — points where film thickness naturally thins — markedly improves corrosion resistance.

Overcoating

Let the first coat dry before applying a second primer coat. The topcoat goes on once the primer has hardened sufficiently. Do not leave the primer uncoated for too long; a primer film is not designed for UV exposure on its own and will chalk outdoors, losing adhesion. After a long wait, sand lightly and remove dust before the topcoat.

Conditions and safety

Apply in mild, dry weather. Do not apply to a damp surface, to metal with condensation on it, or outdoors when rain is expected. Ventilate enclosed spaces and wear a suitable respirator and gloves. Clean equipment with synthetic thinner; collect solvent-soaked rags in a closed metal container.

Protection mechanism

Protection works two ways: a dense film provides a physical barrier against moisture and oxygen, while corrosion-inhibiting pigments chemically passivate the metal surface. Together they extend the maintenance interval of painted steel considerably compared with bare metal or metal carrying only a topcoat.

Limitations

A primer is not a finished coating on its own and must always be closed with a compatible topcoat. Surfaces under permanent water immersion, areas exposed to strong acid or alkali spillage, and surfaces at high service temperature fall outside its scope; epoxy-based systems should be considered there. Non-ferrous substrates such as galvanised steel and aluminium require a different primer system.

Storage

Store in the closed original container in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Protect from frost and excessive heat. Pigment settles during long storage; stir thoroughly before use.
